Kanawha County Sheriffs Department have taken Hughie W. Petry into custody. Petry is charged with attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, use or presentation of a firearm during commission of a felon and fleeing from an officer.

While in custody, Petry was also served with a warrant for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, that had been obtained by the West Virginia State Police from an incident that occurred on Friday.   During that incident, Kanawha County Deputies and West Virginia State Police responded to Juliet Road in the Miami area to investigate a report of a male discharging a firearm in the roadway.   This incident caused the Sharon Dawes Elementary to be placed on lockdown.

At 9:55 a.m. on Sunday, Deputies answered a call to Miami of a male who was creating a disturbance with a shotgun. Deputies saw Petry flee from the scene, eventually jumping into a nearby creek. Deputies pulled Petry from the creek and took him into custody. Petry did admit that his intentions were to kill a person he was accusing of stealing his belongings.

Petry was processed and is currently in the South Central Regional Jail.
