“From the minute that pregnancy test turns positive, you get the responsibility and the honor to protect and take care of another life. That’s a hard feeling when you feel guilty because you didn’t protect your child from something you couldn’t protect him from,” said Melodi Egress, former patient at Fairmont Regional Medical Center.
The Egresses are living in fear after they said their 6-month-old son was stuck by a hypodermic needle in a hospital bed at Fairmont Regional Medical Center.
Egress said, “We came home from being out of town, and I have a heart condition. It was very unexpected. We were home for about 20 minutes and ended up in the hospital. My son is exclusively breastfed, so he stayed with me.”
Egress said on Saturday morning, her son cried in pain and when her husband picked him up out of the hospital bed, they discovered something they thought unimaginable.
“We found a needle. We were shocked. You don’t know what the protocol is. It’s something you see on TV, but it’s not something you imagine is ever going to happen to you,” said Egress.
Egress said hospital workers told them the needle was not the type the hospital uses. After not receiving the response they were looking for Egress took to Facebook.
Egress explained, “I’m not trying to shed negative light here. I just wanted answers, and I feel like I couldn’t talk to the people I needed to talk to. So, I thought maybe if someone saw my post and knew a friend of a friend that knew someone, and somehow I could get a hold of someone to make sure someone is coming in and saying, ‘Hey, this isn’t okay, and here is how we are going to fix it.'”
For now, the Egresses will continue to search for answers. Doctors said they will need to monitor their son for the next year, Egress said.
WBOY reached out to Fairmont Regional Medical Center, which responded with this statement:
“Fairmont Regional Medical Center takes seriously any and all patient complaints and investigates them thoroughly. We are aware of recent social media postings, however privacy laws prohibit us from commenting.”
Egress said, “I just really want to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. I don’t want any other family member to go through what we are going through. It has turned our world upside down.”
