TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – A former Ohio state trooper whose 4-year-old son fatally shot himself with his father’s work-issued handgun has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Fu Sun told a judge in Toledo on Tuesday that he made his biggest mistake ever by not securing the gun. He cried while saying how much he missed his son and how it has affected his family.

Lucas County Judge Myron Duhart told the former trooper there’s no punishment that could be worse than what happened. The judge also said Sun’s lack of criminal record and service in the Army National Guard helped him decide against any jail time.
