VERMILION, Ohio (AP) – Ice blocking a river in Ohio caused it to overflow its banks and prompted the evacuation of around a dozen people and some pets after water began entering some homes.

Authorities say the Vermilion Fire Department made several boat trips late Wednesday to pick up at least 11 people and a few dogs from homes near the Vermilion River in northern Ohio.

Water began rising Wednesday near the mouth of the river in Vermilion due to an ice jam. Authorities said water overflowed onto nearby roads and into some homes in the city along Lake Erie.

The ice jam apparently had broken by early Thursday morning, allowing the river to begin flowing again.
