Ohio man receives life in prison for killing toddler

RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) — A man who authorities say killed his girlfriend’s 1-year-old son by throwing him against a wall has been sentenced to life in prison.

Twenty-seven-year-old Nicholas Catazaro was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to an aggravated murder charge last month in northeast Ohio’s Portage County. He’s eligible for parole after 25 years.

Sheriff’s deputies went to a mobile home in Nelson Township last October after Leon Chehin-Merryman’s mother called 911 to report that her son wasn’t breathing. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

An autopsy showed the toddler’s skull had been fractured. Portage County Prosecutor Victor Vigliucci says Catazaro was watching Leon while the boy’s mother ran errands.

Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday with Catazaro’s defense attorneys.
