MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) – Police in Ohio say a 3-year-old girl has died in a house fire that spread from a vacant building where authorities suspect arson.

Mansfield police said in a release that they were called to assist at a fire scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. They say a blaze in a vacant house had spread to a nearby occupied residence where the 3-year-old was upstairs.

Police say the child couldn’t be rescued due to smoke and flames. The release says a pregnant female in the occupied house was taken to a hospital with possible labor pains and seven other occupants got out safely.

Police say the vacant house fire appears to have been intentionally set.

Authorities say witnesses reported seeing some juveniles around the vacant house before the fire started.
