Shelter-in-place lifted for Optima Chemical Plant in Belle


CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) –  The Shelter-in-place has been lifted for the 2-mile radius surrounding the Chemours Plant in Belle as a result of an explosion and fire that occurred at 10:02 p.m. on Dec. 8. 

Emergency Responders have evaluated the scene and have determined that an all-clear can be issued for the incident. 

In a statement from the Belle Chemical Company, JoLena Broussard Senior Corporate Affairs and Communication Advisor, says quote:

“On Dec. 8, 2020 at approximately 10 p.m., there was an explosion at the Chemours site located in Belle, West Virginia, which is where the Belle Chemical Company facility is located. The explosion was not related to Belle Chemical Company operations. The investigation of the cause of the incident is ongoing.

“All Belle Chemical Company employees have been accounted for and safely evacuated from the premises. All Belle Chemical Company units have been shut down.

“We are actively monitoring the situation.

“Our focus at this time is the safety of our employees and others who are employed on the site, the community members and our first responders.”
