Social Media is Upset There Wasn’t a ‘Sweet Victory’ at the Super Bowl

Was Sunday’s Super Bowl performance the best day ever for SpongeBob Squarepants fans? According to social media, not so much.

Back in November 2018, Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of the sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, passed away. To honor his memory, a Change.org petition was created to have his memory honored at Super Bowl LIII. More than 1 million people signed that petition, hoping to have “Sweet Victory” performed at the big game.

If you are not familiar with SpongeBob, “Sweet Victory” was performed at the “Bubble Bowl”, the show’s version of the Super Bowl in an episode called “Band Geeks.” You can see the clip  below:

Maroon 5, who headlined the halftime show, released a teaser for their performance, featuring a one-second clip of SpongeBob, giving fans hope that the song would make it into the band’s set.

Three days before game time, Sports Reporter Angela Moryan caught a shot outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium showing a shot from the SpongeBob episode, saying, “… I can verify that #SpongeBob WILL BE USED during the Pepsi Halftime Show … We can hear @maroon5 practicing right now.”

Fans took to social media to express their excitement:

The rumors were true. A clip from SpongeBob did make it into the halftime performance, but it was short and there was no “Sweet Victory” to be heard.

The official Nickelodeon Animation Twitter account even weighed in on the  cameo:

 The creator of the petition updated their supporters on Monday saying:

“Well… We did it.

Even though we got YEETED with that Sicko Mode/Sweet Victory mashup, it’s still crazy to think that 1.2 MILLION people signed a petition to get Spongebob’s face on national television. I know Stephen Hillenburg would be extremely proud and honored.

Let it be known that 2019 was the year Spongebob reigned supreme at the Super Bowl.”

All in all, the petition had 1,211,876 signatures.
