The Morgantown Police Department has identified the man who was killed after he jumped from a tree early Tuesday morning in Morgantown.
The man has been identified as Aaron Thomas Riel, 38, of the Morgantown area. Detectives said they have contacted the victim’s family.
Just after 5:30 a.m., Tuesday, Morgantown police officers received a call about a man screaming near the Monongalia County Board of Education office on South High Street.
Officers found the man, who they said was in a “psychiatric state of distress,” was screaming and was climbing trees.
The man then went into a wooded area at the end of Prairie Avenue and climbed approximately 50 feet up a tree, officers said.
Police then called fire and EMS personnel to help. Officers tried to talk the man down from the tree, but he tried to jump from one tree to another and fell to the ground, according to a press release.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He did not have any identification on him. Detectives are working to identify him. Investigators describe him as a white man in his late 30s or early 40s.
