Man accused of stealing Charleston fire vehicle

West Virginia

A man is under arrest tonight in Kanawha County accused of stealing a Charleston Fire Department pickup truck and leading police on a chase.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office says the man, Billy Joe Vance, stole the truck from Station #1 on the West Side.  Firefighters told police Vance came to the station asking to use the phone.  Since they recognized him from previous calls and his face tattoos they allowed him to use the phone.  While he was inside the station firefighters say they received an emergency call and had to leave.

When they returned, the truck was gone.

The criminal complaint says the truck that was stolen had it’s doors left open and the keys inside.

That truck was loaded with $30,000 worth of fire department dive gear.

Kanawha County Sheriff’s Deputies say they found Vance driving the truck on North Grapevine Road.

Deputies chased that truck through northern Kanawha County before it crashed.  That’s when we’re told the man took off on foot.  He was eventually caught and arrested.

He now faces multiple charges including one for stealing the truck, the scuba gear and also for the chase.
