Scammers are posing as AEP employees and threatening to shut power off

West Virginia

WHEELING, WV (WTRF) – Halloween is long gone, but scammers are now posing as AEP employees. And if the bill is not paid, they are threatening to shut off your power.

AEP External Affairs Manager Joelle Moray warns the public that these calls are fake. However, Moray offers a few tips on how you can protect yourself.

“Sometimes scam artists will ask you to go out a purchase a money order or some sort of prepaid Visa,” said Moray. “That is definitely not something AEP would do.”

If you have been receiving these types of calls, AEP urges residents to contact AEP representative at 1-800-852-6942 or report it to the police.
