West Virginia Pepperoni Roll Restaurant Opens in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WOWK) - A snack popular in West Virginia and in parts of Appalachia is delighting tastebuds in Washington, D.C.

Karen Shannon opened Pepperoni Chic, a restaurant that specializes in pepperoni rolls. The Fairmont, WV native wanted to make D.C. feel like home

Shannon says the tradition started in the 1920's with an Italian immigrant who baked goods for West Virginia coal miners.

Toppings can vary but Shannon says fresh bread is key.

"Moms recipe! Then you add pepperoni and it's really important that they are sticks, not slices that's a real controversy in West Virginia," said Shannon

Owners say the idea behind Pepperoni Chic is to take a West Virginia favorite, add a unique flair, and one day pair it with wine.

"We do flavors that they wouldn't consider in West Virginia. Things like gorgonzola," said Shannon.

Shannon says the dish has a rich history and honors both her American and Italian background

WithShannon'ss help pepperoni rolls are now gaining fans in bigger cities like Washinton D.C.
