West Virginia University has announced that it will be offering resources to students, faculty and staff that are affected by the partial government shutdown.

The university said in a press release that it recognizes that the paychecks that some federal employees are missing as a result of the shutdown may be threatening students’ abilities to meet financial obligations. As a result, West Virginia University has joined several other institutions to offer assistance to those affected.

“As always, we want to support our Mountaineer family,” Provost Joyce McConnell said. “All of us at West Virginia University are committed to helping those affected by this shutdown.”

Undergraduate students who are experiencing financial hardship directly due to the shutdown, such as the ability to make tuition payments, are advised that they should contact the WVU Hub by calling 304-293-1988 or by filling out an inquiry form that can be found here. Proof of relevant federal employment and furloughed status, such as by a parent or guardian, may be required and financial assistance may be limited to the waiver of late fees and other charges, the university said.

Additionally, graduate students who are experiencing financial hardship directly due to the shutdown, such as the ability to make tuition payments, are advised to contact the Office of Graduate Education and Life by calling 304-293-7173 or by emailing katherine.karraker@mail.wvu.edu.

Lastly, any faculty or staff that are directly financially affected by the shutdown are advised to send an email to provost@mail.wvu.edu regarding their specific situation.

“Our resources for this are limited, and we likely will not be able to meet all the needs,” McConnell said. “However, we know the weight financial pressures bring. We want to provide whatever assistance we can to lighten that burden.”
