WVU Names New Mascot

MORGANTOWN, WV-(WOWK) - Before the end of No. 21 West Virginia’s 85-70 win over Iowa State, the university named its next Mountaineer mascot.

Trevor Kiess, an Elkins native, will become WVU’s 65th Mountaineer mascot.

“This has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember,” said Kiess. “I’m looking really forward to representing the entire state of West Virginia over the next year.”

Kiess is a senior this year, and will begin studying for a master’s degree next fall. He’ll take the musket from Troy Clemons, who served as the Mountaineer mascot for two years.

Kiess was the alternate mascot under Clemons this year.

“We’re best pals. I look up to him a lot,” said Kiess. “He’s been a mentor of mine, and I’m looking forward to working with him again in the year ahead.”

Kiess said he shared the excitement of the announcement with family members who attended the game, and hopes to make an impact in his new role.

“I just hope I can be a Mountaineer that, no matter where you are in West Virginia, no matter where you’re from, that they can be proud of,” said Kiess. “I want to serve the state and university well.”
