Elmore Breaks Marshall Scoring Record

The Marshall Men’s Basketball team is advancing in the CIT Tournament.

The Heard defeated the IUPUI Jaguars 78-73 Tuesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

Seniors CJ Burks and Jon Elmore led the way with 25 and 22 points respectively.

Marshall will host its second-round CIT game next Tuesday against a yet-to-be determined opponent.

But Thundering Herd fans had more than a win to celebrate Tuesday night in Huntington, as a new all-time leading scorer was crowned king, surpassing Skip Henderson himself.

Tuesday night, Jon Elmore broke Marshall’s all-time scoring record.

Elmore scored the record-breaking basket with about 10 minutes left in the second half, setting off a massive celebration inside the Cam Henderson Center.

The Charleston native not only has the school record for most points but has the school record for most assists, most free throws, and most 3-pointers.

Elmore, or “Johnny Buckets,” as Marshall’s Twitter handle referred to him as, is a Conference USA All-Time Scoring leader and number 42 on the NCAA Scoring List.

Tuesday night also proved to be a historic night for the other half of Marshall’s Dynamic Duo.

Martinsburg native CJ Burks has become number 5 on Marshall’s All-Time Scoring List and has a chance to move up to number 4 in the Herd’s second-round game next week.

Marshall’s victory over the Jaguars was the Herd’s 20th ‘W’ of the season, making Dan D’antoni only the second Marshall coach in school history to have 3-consecutive 20-win seasons, joining the legendary Cam Henderson.
